A Review of "Fresh from the Vegetarian Slow Cooker"
A Review of the cookbook "Fresh from the Vegetarian Slow Cooker", by Robin Robertson In my effort to eat healthier and cook for myself more, I have been searching for tasty recipes to make in my slow cooker, or Crock Pot. Most slow cooker recipes I find entail some sort of stew meat and multiple cans of "cream of something soup". Because I do not eat or cook a lot of meat, I was interested in this book immediately. The recipes I read seemd very interesting, different, tasty and fun. The 200 recipes span from appetizers to soups, entrees and even desserts! There are foods from all over the world, in exciting and imaginative combinations. I have made several recipes from this cookbook, and all have been tasty and fairly easy, I recommend this book with only one or two reservations. Many of the recipes recommend that you cook some of the ingredients before they are placed in the slow cooker. Some vegetables may need to be browned or sauteed in a skillet. Other recipes call for ingredients to be added throughout the cooking process, which makes it difficult to "set it and forget it", as they say. My biggest dislike would have to be the recommendation to have several different sizes of slow cooker for different recipes. These few issues make the seemingly easy process of a slow cooker meal a bit more labor intensive. That said, if you are comfortable in the kitchen and can make these recipes work for you, the fun, exotic and healthful foods are definitely a break from the ordinary slow cooked stews and casseroles. |
